Tuning or a “tune up“ like in the older days of carbureted vehicles is the ability to fine tune a vehicle’s characteristics to ensure its running as efficiently as it can. while often tuning is done after adding performance parts that provide more air, fuel or spark for the engine. while some parts don’t make enough of an air, fuel or spark difference to the vehicle where it’s normal mass airflow, short and long term fuel trims and ignition system can make incremental adjustments for, many are out of range for the computers parameters to adapt for. When this is the case a custom tune of the PCM (computer) is required for the vehicle to run right and at its optimum level, taking full advantage of the power gains from that part or parts.

This however is not where tuning begins or ends… From the factory a vehicles PCM is significantly detuned in order to provide a level of safety for the operator and the vehicle itself. This is where custom tuning comes into play again. With a custom tune parameters such as your air to fuel ratio under idle, cruise and wide open throttle (WOT) are dialed in for engine safety and optimal performance. Engine timing or spark advance is also either advanced for more horse power or retarded for engine safety. Additionally airflow is modified through Mass Air Flow (MAF) or Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensors to optimize the engines air and fueling. These parameters are all modified under a controlled environment through data logging and refining the PCM‘a strategy to achieve optimal results for performance and engine/operator safety.
